Estimados amigos:

Estamos evaluando la posibilidad de optar por el openOffice como herramienta de trabajo de oficina, la verdad es que como lo pintan se ve muy bueno y con posibilidades de crecimiento ilimitadas, pero, es justo decir también que los usuarios están acostumbrados al uso del software de Microsoft y eso ya es una muralla muy grande de sobrepasar; por otro lado, suponiendo que la gente no opone resistencia a un cambio, está también la compatibilidad, es decir, hasta ahora que he usado el OpenOffice version 2.0 las macros son incompatibles; Talvés piensen que hay pocos archivos con macros porque los usuarios no las usan y todo eso pero es otro problema cuando se tiene relaciones con otras empresas y/o con otros países ...

Google va a acolitar en el desarrollo de OpenOffice.org ya que según Chris DiBona, responsable de desarrollo de programas de software libre de la compañía, "Queremos asegurarnos de que el 'software' libre preserva su competitividad dentro de la industria".

Es un gusto ver que una empresa que vale más de 100 mil millones de dólares no olvida sus raices y apoya el software libre.

Hoy la comunidad OpenOffice ha lanzado un parche que corrige una grave vulnerabilidad recien detectada, a continuación los detalles (en inglés):

All,

A security vulnerability affecting OpenOffice.org 1.1.4 and earlier, as
well as 2.0beta, including the developer builds, was recently detected.
It has been fixed and a patch is available for immediate download for
all users of OpenOffice.org 1.1.4.

Users of earlier releases (1.1.3 and prior) must upgrade.

Users of 2.0beta are requested to download the latest beta,
OpenOffice.org 1.9.95. It will include the patch and be ready shortly.

"En su futura versión 2.0, OpenOffice añadirá software para bases de datos similar al de Microsoft Office.

Si algo se le podía recriminar hasta ahora a este Kitt de ofimática, era precisamente la falta de una aplicación para este tipo de tareas.

Si bien la Hoja de cálculo de Open Office también puede ser usada como base de datos, no era suficiente. Hacía falta un software con todos los requisitos necesarios para la creación de bases de datos.

Esta suite de ofimática gratuita y apoyada por la empresa Sun Microsystems prevee tener lista su versión 2.0 para el primer trimestre de este año e integrará un editor de textos, una hoja de cálculo, una aplicación para presentaciones y otra para la gestión de bases de datos entre otras cosas, y todas ellas compatibles con archivos creados con Microsoft Office.
